Well Since Everyone Else is Doing It
I might as well throw out a few of my New Year's Resolutions...
1. Ok, this one is the most important. I really ReAlLy REALLY want to eat different and MORE veggies. I feel like I eat the same 5 vegetables over and over again... despite the millions of varieties on the planet. I just ate my first tomatillo (that I'm aware of) last week!
2. I should also keep an eye on my medical school slacking. I only studied for my histology exam 1 day last block. I managed to do well, but that could really get me in trouble if I'm not careful.
3. I will devote at least one full weekend a month to building my house. I've really been slacking this year. A lot. At this rate I will be living in a bedroom for the rest of my life.
4. I want to start cooking different recipes. I cook quite a bit now... but like the veggie problem I tend to cook the same 20 items. How about 3 brand new recipes a month?
5. Time to dive into EM, and see if I really like it. My elective is starting this month... so I think it's a great chance to really get involved and see if EM is for me. If not, I want to have a chance to explore lots of other fields of medicine before graduation. It would suck to get to 4th year and be like hey, EM sucks... what now???

After watching Julie & Julia, I confess to having the urge to buy the cookbook as well. I am not a cook by any stretch of definition... I could literally subsist on PB&Js (or sandwiches in general) and milk. And if not for my wife, I probably would :)
ReplyDeleteStrangely, however, I have been kicking around the idea of taking on baking as a hobby/stress reliever. If I'm going to put the time and effort into FINALLY learning to cook, I think some nice beer bread or double choco-chip cookies would be a great reward for my troubles.
Let me know if she has anything to say about baking. I may break down and buy it yet.
Oh, I LOVED the movie!!! and I do like the book a lot... although it's not for wimps! It's actually 2 huge volumes and I only bought the first one. Along with a comprehensive collection of recipes for just about anything... there is also a huge amount of "how to" stuff... like how to prepare a chicken for roasting, how to hold a knife, how to properly cube a tomato. Take a look.... you might like it!
ReplyDeleteAs a side note... since I started medical school I've cooked more than I ever have, and I also find it very therapeutic and relaxing. Plus I figure I have to eat anyway... so I'm killing 2 birds with one stone, right?
Thank you for such a wonderful and informative blog. I struggle with histology, so hearing that it came easy to you is comforting. Do you have on any suggestions on the best way to study for it. I do well in answering lecture questions, but score horribly on the labs! I seem to waste hours of valuable study time trying to memorize all the example slides to no avail.
ReplyDeleteThanks again and good luck with the long haul!
Gah. I wish I were in the ER this month... Anyway if you need anything... etc, etc.
