Kissed, Made Up, and Together Again
Dear Anesthesiology,
I'm sorry if any of those things I said in the past hurt you. Yes, you may be a bit less exciting than EM, but I really thing that we could have a stable, happy, loving relationship. But after talking it over with friends, and doing some soul searching, I've decided that I may have judged you unfairly.
I hope you will reconsider our relationship as well. I'm not sure what I have to offer you, and visa versa... and as you know I am still in a committed relationship with EM... but maybe we could spend a little time together and see how things go? We can do a few procedures, a lot of crosswords together, drink cafe au lait, and leave the rectal exams to the internists.
Love Always,
Ella

Don't do it, Ella!
ReplyDeleteHe may be a swell, stable guy, but you'll be bored out of your mind and unsatisfied if you marry him.
I totally get where you're coming from re anesthesiology being not as exciting as EM. But hear me out: Anesthesia is one of the pathways to a career in critical care. I.e. you don't have to be an operating room doc if that's not your cup of tea. Also, with the arrival of CRNAs, a lot of the easier cases are done by them anyway, leaving the anesthesiologist with more complex cases. And critical care is a ton of cards, as well as the rest of medicine.
ReplyDeleteEM is a great rotation as a med student, but for me there were a lot of patients without much wrong with them that I had to go through to get to the acutely ill people. That was much more exciting for me. Lots of cards in EM also.
Doctor D totally has it right... you'll wake up one morning and realize you gave up true happiness for a british dude with a stiff upper lip!
ReplyDeleteNext thing you know, you'll be sneaking around with Orthopedics, too. What a hussy :)
ReplyDeleteMr. C., I would NEVER stoop so low!
ReplyDeleteYou can also get a fellowship in critical care via EM. I'm just saying...
