That being said, I think about Haitians every moment... and wish I had a real way to help. In a few years I will. Until then, I will wait. Bless Haiti.

Not Heartless
If you think I'm heartless for not writing about Haiti, I'm not. It's just that I despise American sensatio-journalism...and I refuse to contribute to the nonsense. Frankly, I don't have anything legit to write about, as I am not there. So I won't. Unlike most journalists, who are willing to drag some poor Haitian guy off the street on the promise of sending word to his family in Miami that he is ok, and then tricking him into discussing things on camera which they promised they wouldn't ask him. I've been through a natural disaster, and I can safely say you should never, ever believe the media. Their truth to false ratio is about 1:1000.

I don't think anyone assumes that you're uncaring or heartless because you didn't post on the subject. Did someone say something to you about this?
ReplyDeleteI felt my post on the subject was pretty trite, and then I got a bunch of comments about how insensitive I was, which greatly annoyed me. I kind on wish I hadn't said anything. I feel the same about sensationalistic bandwagon journalism. I think what bothers me about the journalism on Haiti now is that the country in many ways has been in crisis for YEARS now. It's just now there's an earthquake to attract our attention. It's not like they needed help any less before.
BTW -- I've been liking your recent posts on med school. Keep them coming!
I don't think you're heartless or insensitive because you didn't post. The only thing I posted was that I bought a t-shirt and that 100% of profits from buying that cute shirt goes to Haiti and that if anyone wants to also buy said cute shirt they could do so at such and such site..then I put the link and a picture of the shirt. As you said, I am not there so I have no idea what they are going through. I've been through Hurricanes but never an Earthquake and nothing of that magnitude, so I can not intelligibly contribute.
