Is it Just Me Or....

Ok check this out. I know this girl who is a 4th year med student (not at my school). She's a nice girl but definitely on the weird side. Weird as in she looks a little disheveled most of the time, and has kind of an odd personality. But nice enough. So she wanted to match into anesthesiology... but despite a handful of interviews she didn't match anywhere, and now she's desperately trying to secure a family medicine or peds spot somewhere.

Now here's the kicker. She has Tourette Syndrome. Not super severe, but significantly more than mild. With motor and phonic tics. Now maybe I'm crazy, but isn't it completely possible that she didn't get a spot because of that? I mean, an LP and a motor tick are not friends, folks. So the question is, shouldn't her academic dean or advisor (somewhere along the way) have mentioned this to her... instead of letting her totally sink on match day?

Or am I being a complete insensitive bigot? I don't mean to be. But seriously... a blind guy can't be a fighter pilot. What's the difference?

  1. I see your point and I agree.

Maybe it just never came up with her advisors, who also didn't want to give unsolicited advice.
If she asked about her condition and the effects of matching, then perhaps they did her a disservice.

  2. The thing is that every med student PLANS out their future career with the Dean. We have meetings 3rd and 4th year to make sure we are competitive for the specialty we want.

  3. um. I know a surgeon with Tourette. I guess either a) it was controlled when he interviewed or b) they didn't know, c) luck or d) none of the above. :) I guess this girl didn't get lucky (and probably a good thing!) lol

  4. Okay it is completely scary to me that the Dean would let her sink and completely scary to me that this girl never mentioned it! It is also super scary to me that someone knows a surgeon with a condition that can cause possible motor ticks! And I'm worried that my severe migraines might be a factor in certain specialities since they can knock me on my butt when they get bad.

  5. I do see your point. I'm wondering if her motor tics go away when she's engrossed in something, such as an LP? For instance, a lot of people who stutter are fabulous singers. I would have hoped if that was the case she could have brought this up and addressed it during her interviews.

I'm thinking along the lines of: Why did nobody tell her that going to an interview disheveled was a bad idea? Maybe it wasn't the Tourettes, but a general lack of professionalism and social skills?
