Caribbean Schools

So I'd like to get some discussion going about Caribbean schools. From people who WENT there. I can speculate all I want from people I know... but I'd like to hear about your experiences. Specifically.... which one you went to, if you'd do it again, if you think it's better than the DO option, the quality of the education, the attitude of the professors and administration, work ethic and dedication of the student body, overall living conditions, financial aid, clinical exposure... basically your overall experience.

I want real info. Not a-friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend kinda stuff (unless you are their BFF of course) :)

  2. So I don't know anyone who has gone to the Caribbean for medical school, but I am pursuing the DO route. I'm mildly concerned that your post implies that going the DO route is somehow less than going the MD route. I am a student who applied to both MD and DO schools and interviewed at MD and DO schools. In the end, I picked the DO school because it was the best fit for me. I don't feel that I'm settling somehow, or that my education has suffered. I recently took boards (COMLEX and USMLE) and found them to be equal in rigor and content. I had to study equally hard for both of them. I would hazard a guess that students at a Caribbean school would feel similarly defensive of the education that they worked so hard to attain. All I'm saying is be careful with this topic. It's a touchy one.

  3. RH~ I am not implying anything. You came up with that all on your own. I'm merely asking for first hand information about Caribbean schools, which you clearly do not have. Additionally, if you have read any of my previous posts on DO school, you will see that I have never so much as hinted that going to DO school is anything close to settling. Sounds to me like you are the one who is a bit defensive about it.

  4. I apologize for my misinterpretation of your writings. I too was very interested in Caribbean schools; the only reason I didn't apply was my lack of desire to move to an island in the sea.

I think DO students do sometimes get defensive, and for that I apologize. There's no real reason for it.

  5. I know DO's get a bad rap, and on many occasion are forced to defend their education. Which is terribly wrong. I try to give lots of info about DO schools on my blog because I think its a great route which I often wish I'd done myself.... assuming you have the character to stand up and defend your credentials when need be.

  6. Sweet jesus this is even worse than SDN. I had such high hopes, too.

  7. Dare I ask what that comment means? I mean, what, I can't bring up the "C" word without being compared to SDN? I'm trying to provide some info on Caribbean schools here, folks. What the eff is the uproar all about?

  8. Have you read the blog of Kendra Campbell, MD? She recently graduated from Ross University in Dominica, and I think she gives a really good peek into what a Caribbean school can be like if you put work into it. For her, it was a very enriching experience that she sought out and made the most of.

  9. Check out http://www.jenniferhawke.com/. I don't know her personally, but I've been following her blog for a few years now. She's at the Medical University of the Americas, and is currently doing her rotations here in the US.

  10. I would definitely second that Kendra's blog is wonderful and very informative. I had followed her blog since her 2nd year of med school (she graduated this year) and it's great. Jonathan's blog (the guy's blog that "c" has posted) is also good. He just got done with this first semester at Ross and posts always very honest and real information. I know it's just 2 students, but I think they give you enough info. Also, there's www.valuemd.com for ALL Carrib. and out of US schools - Europe, Africa, etc. They have forums and I'm sure you can find lots of info there. Happy hunting!
