Oh my friggen' God
SOMEONE (not naming names) acted like I was the HUGEST idiot for mixing up two drugs.
Her: What's Solmeterol?
Me: It's a steriod.
Her: NO its NOT!
Me: Oh. I thought it was similar to Prednisone.
Her: No, Prednisone is Prednisone.
Me: I didn't say it WAS Prednisone. I just thought it was a similar steroid.
Her: No, you're wrong. You should know these things. Solmeterol is a long-acting beta agonist.
Me: Oh, ok. I guess I was confused. I don't know why I thought it was a steroid.
Her: Neither do I.
Later I look it up and realize I was thinking of Solumedrol. Which in my opinion, sounds damn effing close to Solmeterol. WOW. I'm SUCH an idiot first month, third year med student.... getting Solmeterol and Solumedrol mixed up. I should probably drop out of med school asap.

I just wanted to drop by and say thanks for the awesome stories from your rotations! It really gives me hope that I'll get through my pharmacology class and be where you are one day.
ReplyDeleteDid you punch her in the ovaries? Because I heard that is actually what solmeterol is code for: please-punch-me-in-the-ovaries-so-I-can't-pass-my-crazy-genes-to-my-offspring.
ReplyDeleteSee Ella, you shouldn't even engage when this happens. After she said, "Prednisone is Prednisone," you can say, "Oh ok, thanks," and then let the whole thing go. Then look it up on your own time.
ReplyDeleteI know this sounds stupid, and probably she should have been more receptive to your questions, but the conflict would have been smaller if you'd done that.
Not to be nerdy, but it's Salmeterol... sounding something like Albuterol. And SoluMedrol sounds like DepoMedrol, Medrol Dosepak, etc. That said, I'm 100% sure at one point during my third year, someone said something about solumedrol to me and I had no idea what it was from the name.
ReplyDeleteNo you shouldn;t drop out, i think. Because i am still having the same case as you during my fifth year. got another a year to go. Maybe then i can revise again.
ReplyDeleteI agree with OMDG - I would probably have gone off and looked it up on my own, given the iciness of her response.
ReplyDeleteLadies, I think you are missing my point. The point is that she easily could have said "I think you're mixing up Salmeterol and Solumedrol... go look them up". Instead she played the "you're an idiot" card. Not cool. And of COURSE I know when to drop a conversation. But sometimes you just feel the need to defend yourself. A tiny bit. Considering that I'm dust on the totem poll...
ReplyDeleteI don't think I'm missing your point, but you're definitely missing ours. If you want the nurses to be less bitchy to you there are things you can do differently, this is one of them. I'm sorry if it doesn't agree with you.
ReplyDeleteHi Ella,
ReplyDeletePoint of detail. I'm a dude, not a lady.
she probably couldn't think of solumedrol when she asked you about solmeterol, hence, didn't know what you're confused with! so, it's HER problem, not yours Ella! Stay strong! :D
ReplyDeletei agree with you ella. they could have responded better to you.
ReplyDeletethis wasn't a nurse. it was my resident.
ReplyDeletewho is SUPPOSED to be teaching me in a nice way
ReplyDeleteDoesn't matter. Look, they should have been nicer to you. There are still things that you ca do to make things go more smoothly. That's just life.
ReplyDeleteIf it's any consolation, I just had an attending cut me down so much over the phone that he made me cry in the middle of the emergency room. I hate "teaching" by insult and intimidation, and it's far too common in the medical profession.
